Research interests and background

General ichthyology, especially fish systematics and biogeography in the Neotropical Region. Main area of research is neotropical biogeography and phylogenetic systematics of characiform fishes, especially the family Crenuchidae.

Buckup received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan (U.S.A.) in 1991. He also holds M.Sc. degrees in Biological Oceanography from the University of Rio Grande (Brasil) and Biology from the University of Michigan. Currently he is a professor in the Department of Vertebrates of the Brazilian National Museum. He was a Founding Member of the Brazilian Society of Ichthyology in 1983 and of the Neotropical Ichthyological Association in 1989. He is also the current President of the Brazilian Society of Ichthyology (SBI).
