This page
was made to publish the results of operational runs of MM5 model over Rio de
Janeiro area, to provide the community with this information. This is a result
from former works
made by one of the members from Laboratório de Prognósticos em Mesoescala, David
Garrana,
undergraduate student at Meteorology Course of UFRJ
and meteorology technician from CEFET-RJ, also member of laboratories GEPAC and LAMMA.
The works
above mentioned involves the performance evaluation of Mesoscale Model MM5
version 2, developed by Pennsylvania State University with National Center for Atmospheric Research
(PSU/NCAR) and made freely available to the community as public domain software.
The
products available in this page are some surface fields (sigma level 0.995)
generated by the model, started with NCEP
global model data
of 00Z, put available everyday at 5:30am (local time). The machine used to run
the model and make pre and post-processing of data is a Pentium III 500MHz, with
256Mb RAM memory, running LINUX
(Conectiva Linux 4.0, Kernel 2.2.13-tcpfix).
We use a
40 by 40 points horizontal grid, with 20km resolution, centered at 23 degrees
south and 43 degrees west, with 23 half-sigma vertical levels. The terrain data
(topography and land-use) have originally 30 seconds resolution (about 1km), and
include an urban category. Are activated the Grell cumulus parameterization,
cloud microphysics, cloud-radiation scheme, MRF Planetary Boundary Layer
parameterization, and a 5-layer soil model. The time step used is 60 seconds,
and the total modeling time is 72 hours.
This page
will be actualized daily, about 4 hours after data being released in NCEP FTP
server. This means the fields will be available about 9:30am (local time).
Any questions,
suggestions, comments or criticizing will be welcome.

ATTENTION: these products are here published to be evaluated by potential
users of this kind of information, to obtain suggestions and ideas for this
service, and in the future it can be made in the best way possible. We warn the
users this is a test phase, this are experimental products and there aren’t
any compromise with the availability or reliability of these.
