It is not necessary to use eye-drops to dilate the pupil, although its use does make the technique easier. Summing up the procedure: focus the light of the ophthalmoscope into the child's eye and observe, through the orifice on the tip of the ophthalmoscope, the pupil area, which, when lacking opacification on the crystalline lens, gives off a red-orange brightness. In case of doubt, an ophthalmologist should be required.
