It
is an exam that can be performed by any pediatrician, as well as by the
nursery team, as long as they have access to an ophthalmoscope, which
costs $250 Reais (about U$120). It is not necessary to use eye-drops to
dilate the pupil, although its use does make the technique easier. Summing
up the procedure: focus the light of the ophthalmoscope into the child's
eye and observe, through the orifice on the tip of the ophthalmoscope,
the pupil area, which, when lacking opacification on the crystalline lens,
gives off a red-orange brightness. In case of doubt, an ophthalmologist
should be required.
