History

This project was proposed by Professors Manoel Luis Costa, Cláudia dos Santos Mermelstein and Leila Francisco de Souza for the 2° Project to Support the Renewall of Undergraduate Teaching (PARG II) of the Rio de Janeiro Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The Head of the Department, Prof Leila Francisco, iniated a metodological revolution in the Department's teaching methods and the renewall of one of the most traditional groups in the Histology and Embriology in our country. The admission of Cell Biology teachers was part of this modernization proccess, which led to the substitution of more than a third of the staff since 1990.

Unfortunately, due to a delay in financial support liberation and in equipaments import, we could only recently regularize the use of Slice of Life and of our products by students.

Prof. Carlos Azambuja helped us for a while, what was essencial in establishing the project , on the training of personel and in the generation of some products.

On February of 1995 we submited to the PARG 95 program of the UFRJ an important update and growth of our Laboratory, which included the purchase of Sillicon Graphics Indy workstations and CDROM recorders. This would enable us with better ways to generate and distribute our products. Unfortunately, we still have no answer from the University.

We have three sets of Pioneer LVD 2400 videodiscs, a Sharp 14 ' television, a Macintosh Quadra 610 (16MB RAM/160MB HD) computer and a Macintosh 14' monitor to make use of Slice of Life.

In order to produce educational material, we have a Macintosh Quadra 840AV (32MB RAM/1 GB HD) computer, a Macintosh 16' monitor, a truecolor LaCie SilverScanner, a Pinnacle Sierra (1.2 GB) magnetic-optic disc and a Hewllet Packard DeskJet 660C colour print. We also have a Dell Optiplex GL 575 (16MB RAM/514MB HD) computer with a Dell monitor and a Zeiss Axiovert complete optic microscope with phase contrast, interferencial, polarization, fluorescency, photography and video from the Imaging Processing Laboratory.

Staff

Professors Leila Francisco de Souza e Leila Del Caro collaborated in the set up phase. The trainees Yugo Murakami and Tompson Peccini also participated. Carlos Azambuja's help was essential for the hole Lab's project. Not only in designing but also in programming, helping to teach the many programs we use.

Susana Hoette and Maria Vitoria F. de Oliveira, undergraduated students, are working with us now.

Sometimes, we admit trainees.

Histology and Embriology Department
